Biogas as fuel, the right choice for valorization of organic waste !
ADEME and Gaz de France ordered a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to study different process regarding biogas recovery from organic wastes methanisation. This study took four indicators into account : greenhouse effect, acidification, eutrophication and energy. The conclusions, published on september 2007 show that the biogas recovery as fuel for buses and household wastes collection vehicules is the most interesting process. What can strengthen the BIOGASMAX partners in their choices and investments !
This study, ordered by Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l’Energie (French environmental and energy control agency) and Gaz de France, was carried out by RDC-Environnement according standards ISO 14040 and 14044. It is mainly intended to help local governments that seek for the best organic wastes treatment in general, or that wish implement a biogas recovery process from organic wastes.
This study deals with two questions : what is the best biogas recovery process from methanisation : vehicule fuel ? heat ? Electricity ? what is the best organic wastes treatment from selective collection ? methanisation ? industrial composting ? This LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) took four classes of impact (indicators) : non renewable primary energy use, greenhouse effect within 100 years, atmosphere acidification, waterways eutrophication. Among all its conclusions, biogas valorization as fuel for buses and household wastes collection vehicules is the best process.
