Biogas to biomethane: an ISET conference about the upgrading process

iset 0409

On February the 21th, 2008, our Biogasmax partner ISET organized an event around the topic « biogas upgrading to biomethane », key step of the transformation of biogas into bio-methane. Numbers of experts tackled technical, economic and legislative questions, while other ones came to present their own country experience. The porceedings of that conference is now available on the ISET web site.

To be used as fuel for vehicle or to be injected to the natural gas grid, biogas requires to be upgraded so it can reach the same quality level of the natural gas. The so-called « raw » biogas, made of methane for 55% (what remains mainly consists of CO2), is upgraded to get a high concentration of methane up to 92% (this methane content varies in accordance with the natural gas quality which is locally delivered). The fuel produced this way is called « bio-methane ».

Our Biogasmax partner, ISET, with Nova Energie, organized the Hanauer Dialog that welcomed 320 participants from 19 countries. This conference led to make out an exhaustive inventory of the knowledge related to this issue. Many experts outlined informations about these technologies costs, the different european regulation and legislative conditions, the most innovative experiences (in Sweden and Switzerland for exemple) and about the development potentials of this technology.

The most significant lessons we can learn from this conference is upgrading still requires very innovative technologies. Today, in Europe, threre are at least five different technological pathways. The matter of the separation of biogas from CO2 took an outstanding importance. Regulation and legislative conditions related to injection and bio-methane use often differ in a significant way from one country to another (Germany, France, The Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and Switzerland), and sometimes, it does not exist.

In order to meet the increasing demand of information regarding upgrading, which is the bio-methane key step, ISET already announced that Hanau Dialogue 2010 will deal with the same subject.
