The Department of Life Cycle Engineering (www.lbpgabi.uni-stuttgart.de) of the Chair of Building Physics (LBP), University of Stuttgart (USTUTT) brings exceptional experience to the development and practical application of holistic approaches, such as the Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) methodology. The Department of Life Cycle Engineering activities began in 1989 at the Institute for Polymer Testing and Polymer Science (IKP). Due to internal structural changes at the University of Stuttgart, the entire LCE Department changed at the beginning of 2006 and became the Chair of Building Physics.
The department has the scientific background on the LCE approach, which comprises economic, technical, environmental and social criteria in terms of supporting decision-making processes.
The research engineers at LBP’s Life Cycle Engineering Department have more than 150 person-years of outstanding experience in developing Life Cycle related methodologies, software (GaBi) and databases.
The development of practical methodologies and software is conducted in close cooperation with industry, leading to scientific-based sophisticated solutions, which are widely used in industry and research. LBP and its cooperation partner, PE International, form together the world’s largest working group of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) experts and are among the world market leaders in LCA software and databases. LBP conducts joint activities with PE International in developing the professional LCA Software-System and GaBi databases for Life Cycle Engineering (www.gabi-software.com). GaBi is one of the leading tools for LCA and LCE worldwide and the database has been specifically praised for its quality and volume.
Contribution to the Biogasmax project
Within the BIOGASMAX Integrated project, the Life Cycle Engineering Department leads Work Package 6, which performs a complete evaluation of the demonstration activities. This comprises various tasks, such as:
- The preparation of an evaluation plan,
- The coordination of evaluation activities,
- Support for verification activities
For each demonstration work package and in each BIOGASMAX site. Also, the provision of an impact assessment tool, for use by decision-makers in the evaluation of the local and global environmental impact of biogas used as a fuel for vehicles and the preparation of various evaluation reports on the BIOGASMAX project, which are important tasks in the project evaluation. The Department for Life Cycle Engineering therefore not only evaluates achievements within the project, but will also demonstrate how capable this technology is in contributing to the goals of the European Union with regard to the reduction of emissions and environmental protection.
